Barbara F. Armstrong
July 21, 1934 - October 16,
F. (Hoyte) Armstrong passed away on Monday, October 16, 2017 in
the Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home after a short illness, she was
83. Barbara was born in Boston, the daughter of the late Oscar
H. & Patti A. (Ridley) Hoyte. She was one of five children. The
family later moved to Malden where Barbara was raised. She was
educated in the Malden Schools system and was a graduate of
Malden High School Class of 1952.
After high school Barbara joined the U.S. Air Force during the
Korean Conflict, she enlisted in April of 1953 and served for
the next 2 years. She was honorably discharged in May of 1955
having attained the rank of Airman 2/Class. Barbara would later
meet and marry the love of her life Lester R. Armstrong Jr. in
the early 1960’s. The couple lived for a time in Boston and
later moved to Malden and started a family. The couple would
welcome seven children into their family.
Barbara would take employment with the State of Massachusetts,
as a Social Worker, working at the Malden Government Center for
the next 32 years, retiring in 2009. Barbara was a longtime
member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Malden. She had a
strong love for her church and family. She enjoyed her time at
all her family holidays and gatherings at her home over the
years. She was known as a home body that loved the company of
others visiting her home. She was a very charitable woman that
shared her time and money with all sorts of organizations.
Barbara is the devoted mother of Tracey L. White & Anthony R.
Armstrong both of Malden, Melaney P. Caldwell of VA, Mark O.
Armstrong of Saugus, Leslie D. Armstrong of Lowell, Lori & Lee
Armstrong both of Boston. She is the loving sister of Patti D.
Frazier of VA, Dr. Arthur H. Hoyte of SC, and James S. Hoyte of
Lexington. Barbara is the cherished grandmother of nine
grandchildren two great-grandchildren.
Barbara is predeceased by her loving husband, Lester R.
Armstrong Jr. who passed on January 3, 1993 and her brother
Ralph M. Hoyte formerly of W. Peabody, and her grandson Gerald
K. White formerly of Malden.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 4-7 PM with a Funeral
Service starting at 7PM at the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral
Home, 144 Salem St., Malden. Relatives and friends may gather at
the funeral home Saturday morning at 10:30AM to form the
procession to Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden.
