Sun Set: June 19, 2017
Sorvena “Timommy” Baptiste Yoyo was born in
Jacmel, Haiti on January 1, 1924 to late parents Eliona Baptiste
and Lorisena Gilles. Sorvena was the first born of two siblings
with younger brother Eliona Jr. born shortly after. As a teen
she was raised by her aunt, Madame Antoinie’ who taught her hard
work and family values.
Sorvena met the love of her life, Jean
Emmanuel Noel Fils Yoyo in 1944. The two were enamored
immediately and began a life and family together in 1946. While
her love was working as a Coast Guard “Gad Kòt”, Sorvena took
care of her growing family and provided for less fortunate
families in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Upon marrying Emmanuel in
1971, the family embarked on a journey to the U.S. in search of
a new home and opportunities, where they settled in Brooklyn,
N.Y. Both parents took on modest work to raise their family
Sorvena our “Timommy” was the most
charismatic and fun-loving mother to all she met. Her cooking
expertise and no nonsense persona made her the ultimate
matriarch and staple of love and nurturing to our family.
Sorvena’s rhythm and love of music would make your heart smile.
All children were her children and all people her friends.
Timommy lived by the motto, “Your family are your friends, take
care of them always.”
