Curtis D. Withers Sr.

Curtis D. Withers Sr., age 79, of Fitchburg, formerly of Everett and Malden, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at Saint Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Brighton.

Curtis was born in 1938 in Malden, son of the late Arthur Withers and Mildred (Smith). He was raised in Malden, graduating from Malden High School in 1957. Shortly after high school, Curtis enlisted in the US Air Force – proudly serving for nine years. During his time in the Air Force, he married his childhood sweetheart, Phyllis A. Halchuk of Malden. The couple first lived in Melrose, then Malden, before finally settling down in Everett to raise their family. They enjoyed 23 years of marriage before Phyllis’ sudden passing in 1986. Curtis remained in Everett until 2014, when he relocated to Fitchburg, MA.

Curtis had most recently worked for the City of Everett as a Housing Coordinator for over 16 years. He took great pride in assisting first time homebuyers purchase and renovate their homes through the city’s program. He retired in 2011 at the age of 71.

In his spare time, Curtis enjoyed building and collecting model trains, cars, and ships. As a self proclaimed “car buff”, he enjoyed being around cars of all kinds and spent many years restoring several himself.

Curtis was preceded in death by his loving wife, Phyllis (Halchuk) Withers; brother, Kenneth Withers; and two sisters, Dorothy and Nancy Withers.

He is survived by his three beloved sons, Curtis D. Withers, Jr. of AZ, Eric J. Withers of Clinton, and Peter J. Withers of Gardner; his brother, David B. Withers of South Yarmouth; five grandchildren, Luke, Kyle, Leah, Robin, and Aiden; along with daughters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Funeral services for Curtis will be held at the Weir MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden on Friday, March 16, at 10 AM. Interment to follow in Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, March 15, from 4-8 PM.
