Edna R. (Burns) Summers West

1939 - 2020

Edna R. (Burns) Summers West, a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grand mother, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 25,, 2020. Edna was born in Milan, Tennessee, in 1939, the daughter of Earl Burns and Lois (Johnson) Burns. She was raised in Tennessee and graduated from Milan High School in 1958. As a youngster, Edna was very athletic, and was a member of her school’s basketball, track, dance, and marching band teams.

Following the lead of her oldest sister, Marjorie, Edna moved to Cambridge, MA in 1959, and in 1971, she married the man who has always made her laugh, Harold A. West. The two settled down together in Cambridge where they raised their family. Although, they were current residents of Malden, MA Edna, Harold, and the entire family, will always consider Cambridge to be their home. Next year they would have celebrated 50 years of marriage.

Before deciding to be a full-time, stay-at-home mother, Edna worked at the Cambridge Welfare Office, doing what she did best, counseling, advising, and mentoring families in need. In 1981, Edna was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and from that day on, her faith, devotion, and love for Jehovah never wavered. She was a long time member of the Cambridge congregation, and she thoroughly enjoyed going “house to house” spreading Jehovah’s word. Edna also loved reading, writing letters (her penmanship was remarkable) and cooking. She regularly hosted Sunday dinners for her family and friends, and always kept a happy, welcoming home.

Edna leaves to celebrate her life, her devoted husband, Harold A. West, her children, Paula Burns of Tennessee, Arthur Summers (Michelle) of Fitchburg, Carla Olivier (Frantz) of Medford, Richard S. Summers (Charlene) of Arlington, Mark Summers of Malden, Jeffrey Summers (Tasha) of Malden, and Kathryn West-Hines (Darius) of Malden. She also leaves her sisters, Marjorie Taylor of Lowell, Joanne Burns and Barbara Burns both of Cambridge, her two sister- friends, Josie Stallworth and Paulette Jarvis, 13 grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, beloved in-laws, and friends. Edna was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Lois Burns, her brother, Thomas Burns, and her sister, Elizabeth Talley, all of Tennessee.

A celebration of Edna's life will take place on Saturday, June 6th at 2 PM, at the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St, Malden.  Due to current health care restrictions, only 10 people will be allowed in building at one time.
