Elaine M. Torres

1949 - 2019


   Elaine M. Torres (Tyre) passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 16, 2019.   She was the beloved wife of the late Angel Y. Torres, Jr. and devoted mother of Arianne Marie Torres and Angel Y. Torres, III, both of Medford.  She was cherished by her siblings, Lawman F. Johnson, Jr. and sister-in-law, Constance A. Johnson of Wilmington; Golden Tyre, Jr. and sister-in-law Ellen P. Tyre of Wakefield; the Honorable Gwendolyn R. Tyre of West Peabody; and sister-in-law Adelina Torres of Malden.  She was the daughter of the late Golden and Virginia (Russell) Tyre of Chelsea.   She is also survived by many nephews, nieces and hundreds of cousins. 

   Mrs. Torres was a registered nurse for 47 years and worked at the Cambridge Health Alliance (formerly Whidden Memorial Hospital) for her entire career. She held several key positions, including Clinical Leader of the Emergency Department for many years and, then, Clinical Leader of the Medical Specialties Department.  In the early 1990’s, Mrs. Torres played key role in raising awareness of Domestic Violence issues.   In 1994 she helped formulate the Whidden’s Domestic Violence policy and Emergency Department protocols on the issue. Throughout her career, she was a strong advocate for victims of violence.

   Mrs. Torres retired less than three years ago. She was a dedicated Jehovah’s Witness and active servant in her local congregation.  She grew up in Chelsea, MA and moved to Medford shortly after her marriage.  She was extraordinary and will be missed sorely by all those who loved and knew her. 

   Funeral service will be held in the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St., Malden, on Friday, January 25, 2019 at 11AM.

Elaine’s interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-8PM.
