1931 - 2021
(Briggs) Paterson, a longtime resident of Malden, passed away
peacefully in her home on Thurday, August 19th. Joan was born in
new Brunswick, Canada, in 1931, the daughter of Charles and
Myrtle Briggs. She was raised in Maine, growing up in Fairfield
and Waterville. After completing high School, she attended
Bentley College, where she earned her degree in Accounting. She
worked as an accountant for years at the Kaitz and Levine
Accounting Firm in Boston, and was most recently working at the
Herbert Cohen Law Firm in Boston, working into her late 80’s.
Joan married her sweetheart, George G. Paterson in Boston in
1954. The two would move to Malden where they raised their
family. They shared 26 years of marriage until George’s sudden
passing in 1980.
Aside being involved in her childrens lives while growing up,
Joan had a great passion for dancing the Tango. She specifically
loved the Argentinian Tango, and was a founding member of the
Tango Society of Boston.
She is survived by her children, Jane E. Merrithew and husband
Dana of Rumney, NH, Daniel G. Paterson and wife Valerie of
Greensboro, NC, and Glenn A. Paterson and wife Jen of Rocky Mt,
VA, her siblings, Gerald Briggs of ME and Dorothy Keach of SC,
her grandchildren, Rebecca, Jesse, Shannon, Randi, Larry,
Andrew, Lindsay, Abby, Rachael, Colleen, and Kyle, and her
great-grandchildren, Georgia, Justice, Briggs, Wesley, Fallon,
Ada, Max, Liam, and Desmond. Joan was preceded in death by her
Funeral services will be held at the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule
Funeral Home, 144 Salem St, Malden, on Saturday, August 28th, at
10:00 AM. Interment to follow in Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden.
