G. Smith, a retired officer with the US Coast Guard, passed away
on Monday, Oct 7th, in Boston. Paul was born in
Taunton, MA, and moved to Malden at an early age where he was
raised and educated. It was in high school in Malden that he
met his future wife, Isabelle Conley. After high school, Paul
enlisted in the US Coast Guard. He served during the Korean
Conflict and Vietnam War, and after 22 year retired as a Lt.
Commander, and had earned a Bronze Star. He returned to the
Boston area, living in Melrose before going back to Malden. He
began working as a Captain, sailing oil tankers from Boston to
Nova Scotia, and later running the ferries from East Boston to
Boston. He even drove tour boats on the Potomac River while
living in Virginia for a short time.
He is survived by his wife
of 62 years, Isabella Smith, his daughter Karla Lynn Wilson of
Everett, and his grandchildren, Evan and Tia.
Paul was preceded in death
by his daughter, Denise Rose Smith, and his granddaughter, Angel
Family and friends may
gather at the Wyoming Cemetery, 205 Sylvan St, Melrose at 9:45
for at 10 AM graveside committal on Friday, October 11th.
