Jacione “Jessie” Nagel

1937-2017

Jacione “Jessie” Nagel passed away peacefully at Massachusetts General Hospital on October 2, 2017 after a sudden illness. She was 79.

Jacione was born in Paranaíba, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, in 1937. She was one of six children of the late João Alves Faria and the late Virginia Nunes Faria. Her siblings are Jalda Aparecida Faria Machado, Jacira Faria, Juvenal Duarte Faria, the late Jurandyr Faria and the late Jazon Faria.

Jacione came to the United States at age 22, and she became a US citizen in 1969. She was a proud immigrant with a love of Brazilian coffee, cooking, and crafts, especially knitting and sewing.

Jacione went to nursing school on nights and weekends while raising her children and working full time. She became a registered nurse who performed medical research. She also served mentally ill patients in a hospital and elderly nuns in a convent in New York state. Because of her big heart, she generously gave her time and energy to her patients. Her work instilled her life with great meaning.

Jacione cherished her relationships with her three children and their spouses: Michelle Trammel and her husband Henry Trammel, residing in Malden, MA; John Nagel and his wife, Rebecca Boyd, residing in Chicago, IL; and Jodi Kurian and her husband Jim Kurian, formerly of Boston and now residing in Canberra, Australia. Jacione was also the loving grandmother of John and Rebecca’s children, Zachary, Julia, Alex, Isabelle and the late Jacob. Jacione dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren, and worked hard to instill in them the values of education and kindness to others.

Jacione was loved by her many great friends and had deep connections spanning decades and continents.

Jacione lived an active life after she retired, traveling and frequenting the Malden Senior Center to attend classes such as yoga and fabric art. She lived an independent and spirited life.

Jacione has had several nicknames over the years. Some call her “Jackie”, others “Jessie” or “Jaci”. Her given name is pronounced zhä•sē•ō•nē.

Jacione’s memorial will be held at the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St., Malden, MA on Sunday, October 8, 2017 from noon until 2 PM. Relatives and friends are welcome to visit and pay their respects at this time.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Malden Senior Center. Please make checks payable to “Malden Senior Center” and write “in memory of Jacione Nagel” in the memo line. Mail to Malden Senior Center, 7 Washington St., Malden, MA 02148.
