Rev. Dr. Gordon J. Mercer

1924 - 2018

Rev. Dr. Gordon J. Mercer, a longtime resident of Saugus, passed away peacefully in his home on July 2, with his loving family by his side. Gordon was born in Cambridge in 1924, the only son of George and Annie Mercer. At an early age he moved to Everett, and he graduated from Everett High School with the Class of 1942. After high school, Gordon studied Mortuary Science and graduated from NEI in Cambridge in 1943, before enlisting in the US Navy. While in the Navy, he served as a Pharmacist Mate, and upon his honorable discharge he returned to the Boston area. He took a job in the probation department of the Malden Disstrict Court, where he remained until retiring in 1989 as Assistant Chief Probation Officer.

In June of 1949, Gordon married his sweetheart, Winnie V. Mulley. The two soon moved from Everett to Saugus where they raised their family. They shared 69 years of marriage together.

While working for the court system, Gordon attended Tufts University where he received his Bachelors Degree, and then continued on to Salem State University where he earned his M.A. in Education. After his retirement, Gordon attended Logos University where he received his Doctor of Ministry Degree.

Gordon was a dedicated member of the Trinity Evangelical Church, where he served as an Elder. He was also a founding board member of Teen Challenge New England. He loved sailing and was a proficient woodworker.

He is survived by his wife, Winnie V. Mercer. Devoted father of Rev. Dr. David and Donna Mercer of Raymond, NH; Paul who preceded him in death and Kiki Mercer of Arlington; Rev. Dr. James and Deborah Mercer of Burnett, TX; Karen and Robert Milordi of Lynnfield, as well as 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Evangelical Church, 105 Haverhill Street, North Reading, MA on Sunday, July 8th. Visitation will be from 3:30 to 5PM, with the memorial service starting at 5PM, followed by a reception in the Church.
