Sophia Cecilia Maria McGonagle

March 11, 1942-February 16, 2018

Sophia Cecilia Maria (Smink) McGonagle passed away Friday evening with her loving family at her bedside, she was 75. Sophie was born and raised in Amersfoort, Holland the daughter of the Thedorus & Maria(Koenen) Smink, during the height of Nazi occupation of World War II.

She traveled Europe extensively as a young woman, before arriving in the United States in 1960.  She took an au pair position in Everett, where she befriended her neighbor, Christine McGonagle, who took an instant liking to this pretty, Dutch girl, Sophie. Christine introduced Sophie to her son, Chet; and on September 14, 1963, much to Christine’s delight, Sophie and Chet were married. Christine always claimed that she gained both a second daughter and a life-long best friend the day Sophie married Chet.

Although, Sophie was small in stature, she was a strikingly, beautiful blond.  She answered to many knick-names, including, Fitzy, Fi, and Minky. She had an excellent sense of humor, and took well the relentless teasing of her barely-five-foot zero inches in height. Her come-back in most instances was, “You’re not much, if you’re not Dutch.” Due to her good humor and friendliness, Sophie made friends easily and those friendships lasted a lifetime.

Sophie was a wonderful cook and a generous hostess at holiday gatherings for her extended family and friends. She was a loving, wife, mother, and Nana, and particularly enjoyed spoiling her five grandchildren.  In her spare time, she loved reading mysteries and playing card games.  She and Chet both enjoyed traveling in their retirement, and not surprisingly, she loved Dutch Aruba, and returning “home” to Holland often to visit her family.

Sophie was also a long-time employee of Stop and Shop in Malden, where she worked in the meat room. She was exceedingly proud of her Dutch heritage, and was extremely honored when executives from Royal Ahold, the Dutch parent company of Stop and Shop, were introduced to her at the Malden store so that she could welcome them in their shared, native language.

Sophie was the beloved wife of 54 years of Chester “Chet” J. McGonagle. Loving mother of Owen E. McGonagle and his wife, Catherine, of  Milton & Scott D. McGonagle and his wife, Judith, of Wakefield.

Sister of the late Henk & Co Smink formerly of Amersfoort, Holland.

Cherished grandmother of Daniel, Justin, Audrey, Brian, and Evan McGonagle. Sister-in-law of Kathleen Gillespie, Thomas & Barbara McGonagle, and the late, John McGonagle.

Auntie of Els Willemsen, Robert Smink, Marijke Smink, Theo Smink, and Thea Land of Holland; and Kelley Connors, Michael Gillespie, John McGonagle, and Ryan McGonagle of MA.

Great Auntie of many grand-nieces and grand-nephews and even some great-nieces and great-nephews in both MA and Holland.
