Evelyn P. McCleary


Evelyn P. (Rice) McCleary, a longtime resident of Medford, passed away on Tuesday, August 2nd, in Medford. Evelyn was born in Everett in 1929, the daughter of William and Mildren (Lord) Rice. She was raised in Woburn and graduated from Woburn High School with the Class of 1947. In 1950 she married her sweetheart, James F. McCleary. James then went into the Army, and upon his discharge in 1953, the two settled down together in Medford to raise their family. They shared over 65 years together, and less then a month apart with James’ passing last month. Evelyn enjoyed tending to her garden, and liked to play 10 pin bowling. She also would travel frequently with her husband but especially enjoyed her long vacations in Hawaii where she loved the ocean and being in the sunshine.

She is survived by her children, James McCleary and wife Valerie of Newbury, Roger McCleary and wife MaryBeth of Salem, NH, Cathy DeSimone and husband Edward of Malden, her 8 grandchildren, and her 4 great-grandchildren.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband James F. McCleary, her son David McCleary, her parents William and Mildred Rice,  and her siblings, Roger Rice, Walter Rice, Mildred Murphy, and Barbara Peterson.

Evelyn's  funeral  will be held at the Weir-MacCuish Funeral Home, 144 Salem St, Malden, Saturday, August 6th, at 8AM, followed  by a funeral service at 9AM. Committal will be at a later date, honoring her long dream of having her and her loving husband ashes spread over the big beautiful ocean of Hawaii. Visitation will be held on Friday, Aug 5th, from 4-8 PM
