James F. McCleary, a longtime resident of Medford, passed away on Mon, July 11, at his home. James was born in Cambridge in 1929, the son of James and Mary McCleary. He was raised in Somerville and graduated from Somerville High with the Class of 1947. Soon after high school, her married his sweetheart, Evelyn P. Rice of Woburn. He then enlisted in the US Army, where he served stateside during the Korean conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1953, having attained the rank of corporal.


James was a longtime Local 25 Teamster truck driver, he worked for many trucking company's with most of his years spent working and retiring from Consolidated Freightways in Woburn. He was a member of the American Legion of Medford, the VFW of Medford, the Lodge of Elks of Woburn, and the Ancient Order of Hiberians of Malden. James enjoyed reading, watching old movies. the history channel, and loved listening to music. He would attend the monthly breakfast that the Teamsters held, this kept him in touch with his buddies. He also liked to play $2 scratch tickets, the nightly number, and Mass Cash, never betting much but always hoping to win big.

 
He is survived by his wife Evelyn P.(Rice) McCleary, his sons James McCleary and wife Valerie of Newbury, Roger McCleary and wife MaryBeth of Salem, Cathy DeSimone and husband Edward of Malden as well as 8 grandchildren 4 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.


James was preceded in death by his son David McCleary of Medford MA, and his sister Leah Martell of Woburn MA. Funeral services will be held at the Weir-MacCuish Funeral Home, 144 Salem St, Malden, on Fri, July 15th, at 10 AM. Committal will be at a later date, honoring Jim's long dream of having his and his loving wife's ashes spread over the big beautiful ocean of Hawaii. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thurs, July 14th, from4-8 PM
