Calastine R. May

November 26, 1918-November 8, 2017

Calastine R. (MacDougall) May of Malden, passed away on Wednesday evening, November 8, 2017, in the Rosewood Nursing Home in Peabody, she was 98 years old, just three weeks short of her 99th birthday.  She was the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Smith) MacDougall and was born November 26, 1918 in Cape Breton N. S. Canada.  She was one of twelve children, 10 girls, 2 boys.

Her father was a fisherman and they moved to the United States and settled in Malden where she was educated in Cheverus Catholic Elementary and High School.

She would later meet John May and the couple married on Dec. 10, 1944 and remained in Malden until recently when she went into the Rosewood Nursing facility which would have been 73 years in the same home.

Calastine worked in the Whidden Hospital as the house mother for the nursing students for the nursing program for several years until the program closed, at which time she became the evening switchboard operator in the hospital until her retirement.

After her retirement she kept herself busy with knitting, reading, gardening and enjoying her grandchildren and family.   She enjoyed baking and did desserts for her nephews and grandchildren until just recently.  She was always happy in her kitchen.  She was also a great Boston sports fan.  Loved all sports but especially the Boston Red Sox and the Patriots.

Calastine or better known to us as Mom, Callie , Grammie or Mammie May  who knew and loved her will be truly missed and a huge hole has been left in our family.

Callie is survived by her daughter, Nancy A. Delaney and her husband Glenn W. of Peabody and her daughter-in-law, Barbara May of West Newbury.  Calastine was the loving sister of Claire Brodeur of Tewksbury. Cherished grandmother of Amy Delaney of Fitchburg, Lisa LaRiviere and her husband David & Stacy Flynn and her husband Nick all of Bradford, Katie Delaney and her husband Scott Akerley of Crofton, MD and Allyson May of West Newbury. Great-grandmother of seven.

Callie is predeceased by her loving husband John May, her son,  J. Michael May,  her siblings, Helen Elliott, Mary Cormier, Elizabeth Montecavo, Jessie McKinnon, Timothy and John MacDougall, Sally Searle-Spratt, Margaret Lawson, Irene Strum and Theresa Russell.
