Edward Maxwell, a longtime resident of Malden, passed away July
12, 2017 in Danvers, after a short stay at the Kaplan Family
Hospice House. Joe was born in 1948, the son of Joseph and Alice
(Cahill) Maxwell. He spent a few years in Roxbury before his
family moved to Charlestown, where he completed his education.
He then enlisted in the US Marines, and helped our countries
fight during the Vietnam War. After his honorable discharge, he
returned to the Charlestown area. He soon met his future wife,
and moved to Malden to be closer to her, and the two married in
1982. They settled down together in Malden to raise their family
and have lived in the same house ever since.
Joe first worked as a Respiratory Therapist after being trained
at the Deaconess Hospital. That didn’t last long as he joined
the Roofers Local 33 in Boston, and had worked primarily as a
roofer since, until heath issues slowed him down. Joe was active
in the union, acting as shop steward, being a member of the
executive board, even when he was working less; he still
remained up to date on the activities of the union. He had also
ran his own company in Malden, Town Roofing, for many years.
Joe was very handy and independent, building a home in Maine
nearly by himself for his family to enjoy. He spent time
planting the gardens surrounding the house, and was very proud
of his blueberry bushes, grape vines, and other trees and bushes
he planted. He was also a collector of nearly everything,
especially Red Sox Memorabilia, coins, books, and stamps.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara A. “Bonnie” Maxwell, his
mother, Alice (Cahill) Clough of Malden, his children, Ian
Maxwell and wife Jenn of TX, Casey Frazier and husband Al of PA,
Andrew Maxwell and wife Kristen of Medford, Lacey Conners and
husband Wyatt of Somerville, and Maya Ferrell and husband Shawn
of TX, his sisters, Diane Keys of Malden, Nancy Holt of ME, and
his grandchildren, Cliffy, Gabe, Riley, Peyton, Brendan, Jake,
Reeves, Eli, and Audrey.
Joe was preceded in death by his father Joseph E. Maxwell Sr.,
and his brother Martin Maxwell.
Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 14, 2017 in the Sacred
Hearts Church, 297 Main St., Malden at 10AM. Relatives and
friends are asked to go directly to church. Visitation will be
held at the funeral home on Thursday July 13th. from 4 – 8 PM.
In lieu of Flowers, please consider making donations in Joe’s
memory to the Kaplan Family Hospice House, 78 Liberty Street,
Danvers, MA 01923.
