John M. “Big John” Latham

1942 - 2017

John M. “Big John” Latham, a resident of Walpole who had been a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, October 10th, in Norwood.  John was born in Malden in 1942, the son of Calder and Elsie Latham.  He was raised in Malden and graduated from Malden High School with the Class of 1960.  After high school he became a Hydraulic Mechanic, working  for New England Industrial Truck.  He worked there for many years until an accident forced him to leave the company.  While recovering from the accident, he attended college, first Bunker Hill Community College where he received his Associates Degree, then he received his Bachelors  Degree from U. Mass, Boston, before receiving his Masters in Educational Counseling from Boston University.  Later he took employment with the Malden Housing Authority where he worked for 10 years, retiring in 2006.

John was a member of the Moose Lodge of Malden.  He enjoyed golfing and traveling.  He was also very handy and was always puttering around the house fixing what was needed.

John had been first married to Anne Carolan, who moved to the US from Ireland in 1960.  They lived in Melrose where they raised their family, sharing many wonderful years until her passing in 2000.  He found love again though, and married Catherine Trombly, and the two had settled down together in Walpole where they have lived since 2005.

He was preceded in death  by his first wife, Anne (Carolan), and his brother, William E. Latham.

John is survived by  his wife,  Catherine (Trombly) Latham, and also the Late Anne (Carolan) Latham.  Devoted father of Mark E. Latham and wife Dawn of Raymond, NH, and Sean M. Latham and wife Stacy of Leominster, and stepfather of Christopher Trombly of MN.  Cherished brother of Calder B. Latham Jr. of ME, Elvira J. Latham of Malden, and the late William E. Latham.  Proud grandfather of Noah, Alexander, Maxwell, and Sarah.

Visitation for John will be Sat, Oct 14th, from 4 – 8 PM, at the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St, Malden.  A graveside service will be held at Wyoming Cemetery, 205 Sylvan St, Melrose, on Monday, Oct 16th, at 11 AM.  For obituary and directions,
