“Big John” Latham
John M. “Big John” Latham, a resident of
Walpole who had been a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away
suddenly on Tuesday, October 10th, in Norwood. John
was born in Malden in 1942, the son of Calder and Elsie
Latham. He was raised in Malden and graduated from Malden High
School with the Class of 1960. After high school he became a
Hydraulic Mechanic, working for New England Industrial Truck.
He worked there for many years until an accident forced him to
leave the company. While recovering from the accident, he
attended college, first Bunker Hill Community College where he
received his Associates Degree, then he received his Bachelors
Degree from U. Mass, Boston, before receiving his Masters in
Educational Counseling from Boston University. Later he took
employment with the Malden Housing Authority where he worked for
10 years, retiring in 2006.
John was a member of the Moose Lodge of
Malden. He enjoyed golfing and traveling. He was also very
handy and was always puttering around the house fixing what was
John had been first married to Anne Carolan,
who moved to the US from Ireland in 1960. They lived in Melrose
where they raised their family, sharing many wonderful years
until her passing in 2000. He found love again though, and
married Catherine Trombly, and the two had settled down together
in Walpole where they have lived since 2005.
He was preceded in death by his first
wife, Anne (Carolan), and his brother, William E. Latham.
John is survived by his wife, Catherine (Trombly)
Latham, and also the Late Anne (Carolan) Latham. Devoted father
of Mark E. Latham and wife Dawn of Raymond, NH, and Sean M.
Latham and wife Stacy of Leominster, and stepfather of
Christopher Trombly of MN. Cherished brother of Calder B.
Latham Jr. of ME, Elvira J. Latham of Malden, and the late
William E. Latham. Proud grandfather of Noah, Alexander,
Maxwell, and Sarah.
Visitation for John will be Sat, Oct 14th,
from 4 – 8 PM, at the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home,
144 Salem St, Malden. A graveside service will be held at
Wyoming Cemetery, 205 Sylvan St, Melrose, on Monday, Oct 16th,
