John P. Hargreaves

1923 - 2018


John P. Hargreaves, a lifelong resident of Malden, passed away on Friday, Oct 12th, after a brief illness. John was born in Malden in 1923, the son of Percival and Marian Hargreaves. He was raised in Malden and graduated from Malden High School with the Class of 1941. In 1942, he joined the US Air Force to help our country’s fight in WWII. While in the service, he was stationed in Utah where he met his future wife, Mary DeCisto. The two were married in 1946 after John’s discharge and settled in Malden. They were married for 64 years until Mary’s passing in 2010. When he returned to Malden, he joined the Malden Fire Department and attained the rank of Lieutenant before retiring in 1985. John also worked part time at the Adler Supermarket in Oak Grove in years past. He enjoyed summering in Ogunquit, Maine with his family for many years. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren in his retirement years. He was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed playing bridge, cribbage and bowling.

   He is survived by his children, Karen L. Zappy and husband Al of Windham, NH, and Paul A. Hargreaves and wife Lisa of Byfield, his grandchildren, Erica and husband Chris Wainer, Abbey and wife Natalie Harburn, and Edward Hargreaves, and his great grandchildren, Claire and Ian Wainer and Evelyn Harburn, born in the early morning on the day of his death. Dear friend of Marjorie Fletcher He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, as well as his siblings, Ruth Wilson, Arthur Hargreaves, and Marion Bacon.

Calling hours for John will be held on Saturday, October 20 from 3–6, with a prayer service at 5:30.

John will be interred at a later date in the NH Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army.
