MaryEllen Garland



MaryEllen Garland, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, January 8, 2019. MaryEllen was born in Boston in 1947, the daughter of Stavros and Esther Chopelas. She was raised in Malden and attended Malden High School between 1961-1965. In 1969 she met her sweetheart, David Garland. The two traveled around the U.S. together then married and settled down in Malden MA. They shared 50 years of marriage and raised their daughter, Angela (Garland) Nazzaro. They have two grandsons, Nicholas and Jake Nazzaro.
MaryEllen worked for many years as a receptionist, during that time she attended college and achieved a degree as a paralegal. She also enjoyed music, dancing, gardening, cooking and going on vacations. She loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by her siblings, Diane Dillon, Gregory Chopelas, Melanie Strickland, Vivian Chopelas, Christopher Chopelas, Thomas Chopelas, Timothy Chopelas, Christine Cugini and Virginia Beninati, along with many nieces and nephews.
Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her sisters, Stephanie Dillon, Cynthia Chopelas and Rena Dillon and her brothers, Stephen Chopelas, Arthur Chopelas, George Chopelas and Lester Burnell.
Visitation for MaryEllen will be held at the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St, Malden on Thursday, Jan 17th, from 5 – 8 PM. A graveside service will be held on Friday, January 18th, at 11 AM at the Puritan Lawn Cemetery, 185 Lake St, Peabody.
