Eugene "Gene" Gallagher

February 19, 1929- September 6, 2017

Eugene "Gene" Gallagher, a longtime resident of Malden, passed away on Wednesday, September 6, 2017, in Danvers, surrounded by his loving family. Gene was born in Philadelphia, PA, the oldest son of five, boisterous, close brothers. After completing his education, he enlisted in the Unites States Navy, to see the world. And he did, traveling to numerous countries and continents, including Antarctica! His service brought him to the Boston area, where he met his sweetheart, Margaret Mary Maher, at a USO dance. They were married at Immaculate Conception Church in Malden July 7, 1950. After moving and enjoying other states, they settled in Malden to raise their family, while Gene continued to serve in the Navy. He retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer after serving his country for 30 years.

After retiring, Gene had multiple jobs in the area, including working for the Post Office as a mail carrier in Malden. At the same time, he attended Wentworth College in Boston to get a Welding degree. This led him to positions in elevator construction and repair, and ultimately his last position, as an elevator inspector for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Gene was very active in the community, giving of his time and talent to several organizations. He was a member of the Lions, Moose, Irish American Club, Veterans of America, and the Elks, where he was a Past Exalted Ruler and also served as a District Deputy.

Gene was an outstanding man, and anyone he met was instantly his friend and someone they would always remember. His sense of humor was legendary, and he was overly generous to everyone. He especially liked to bestow big tips to servers. Gene was a talented singer, who even until recently had an amazing voice. He particularly liked singing Irish ballads, with "Danny Boy" a frequently requested favorite.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Margaret Maher Gallagher, his devoted children, Maureen Scheuch (Charlie), Eugene Gallagher Jr., and Kathleen Long (Mark, deceased), grandchildren Kristin Surette (Jeff), Matthew Gallagher, Dorian Gower (Micah), and Devyn Buschow (Justin). Gene was also blessed with great grandchildren Karlee Surette, Tommy Surette, Ellie Buschow, and Joel Buschow. He also has numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends all over the globe.

He was predeceased by his brothers Andrew Gallagher Jr., and Dennis Gallagher, and Andrew's wife Anna Gallagher.

Funeral services will be held at the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St., Malden, on Monday, September 11, at 9:00 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in the Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant St, Malden at 10:00 AM. Interment will be private. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, September 10th, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers contributions in Gene’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Road, Waltham, MA 02452 or USO via: USO.ORG/Donate.
