Eugene "Gene" Gallagher
February 19, 1929- September 6,
Eugene "Gene" Gallagher, a
longtime resident of Malden, passed away on Wednesday, September
6, 2017, in Danvers, surrounded by his loving family. Gene was
born in Philadelphia, PA, the oldest son of five, boisterous,
close brothers. After completing his education, he enlisted in
the Unites States Navy, to see the world. And he did, traveling
to numerous countries and continents, including Antarctica! His
service brought him to the Boston area, where he met his
sweetheart, Margaret Mary Maher, at a USO dance. They were
married at Immaculate Conception Church in Malden July 7, 1950.
After moving and enjoying other states, they settled in Malden
to raise their family, while Gene continued to serve in the
Navy. He retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer after
serving his country for 30 years.
After retiring, Gene had multiple
jobs in the area, including working for the Post Office as a
mail carrier in Malden. At the same time, he attended Wentworth
College in Boston to get a Welding degree. This led him to
positions in elevator construction and repair, and ultimately
his last position, as an elevator inspector for the Commonwealth
Gene was very active in the community, giving of his time and
talent to several organizations. He was a member of the Lions,
Moose, Irish American Club, Veterans of America, and the Elks,
where he was a Past Exalted Ruler and also served as a District
Gene was an outstanding man, and
anyone he met was instantly his friend and someone they would
always remember. His sense of humor was legendary, and he was
overly generous to everyone. He especially liked to bestow big
tips to servers. Gene was a talented singer, who even until
recently had an amazing voice. He particularly liked singing
Irish ballads, with "Danny Boy" a frequently requested favorite.
He is survived by his loving wife
of 67 years, Margaret Maher Gallagher, his devoted children,
Maureen Scheuch (Charlie), Eugene Gallagher Jr., and Kathleen
Long (Mark, deceased), grandchildren Kristin Surette (Jeff),
Matthew Gallagher, Dorian Gower (Micah), and Devyn Buschow
(Justin). Gene was also blessed with great grandchildren Karlee
Surette, Tommy Surette, Ellie Buschow, and Joel Buschow. He also
has numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends all over the

Andrew's wife Anna Gallagher.
Funeral services will be held at
the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St.,
Malden, on Monday, September 11, at 9:00 AM, followed by a Mass
of Christian Burial in the Immaculate Conception Church, 600
Pleasant St, Malden at 10:00 AM. Interment will be private.
Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Sunday,
September 10th, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM.
