Donald V. Dortona

August 31, 1932 - July 11, 2017

Donald “Don” Dortona died July 11, 2017, after battling cancer. He was born on August 31, 1932 in Revere, MA to Dominic and Rose D’Ortona and was raised in Malden, MA.

Upon graduating from Malden High School, Don joined the United States Air Force and served in the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he came home and met the love of his life, Sandra “Sandie” Benner. They were married in 1958 and had three sons: David (married to Kelly) of Salem, NH, Gary (married to Gina) of Hollis, NH and Chris (married to Cheryl) of Revere, MA. He was the devoted Papa to Nicky, Danny, Tailor, Donnie, Bobby, Matthew, Gracie, Mark, Annemarie, Adam and Jason. He is also survived by his sister, Joyce (D’Ortona) and her husband Harry Fleischer, his brother-in-law, Al Young and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Don was a union carpenter and he and Sandie built a successful real estate company buying, renovating and managing multi-family homes and apartment buildings in the Malden area, NH and even FL. He could always be counted on to coach one of his sons’ various teams when they were young.  More recently, he loved attending and cheering on his grandchildren in their many activities. When he wasn’t working, Don was a devout follower of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots and watched every game he could.

Don and Sandie were an inseparable couple that enjoyed their active winters in Hollywood Beach, FL walking along the Broadwalk and playing golf with friends. They spent the remaining months of the year between Cobbetts Pond in Windham, NH and the Malden area. They cherished their family gatherings at the lake and their nights out dancing with “the keys” in both MA and FL. Sandie will miss Don beyond words.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made by mail in Don’s name to Brookhaven Hospice of NH via the Community Hospices of America Foundation at: CHA Foundation, 500 Faulconer Drive, Suite 200 Charlottesville, VA 22903.

Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours on Friday, July 14, 2017 from 4-7PM in the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St., Malden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2017 in the Sacred Hearts Church, 297 Main St., Malden, at 11AM. Friends and relatives are asked to go directly to church by 11AM.
