Walter E. Cummings


       Walter E. Cummings,  a longtime resident of Malden, formerly of  Everett & Lynnfield, passed away on Saturday, August 6, 2016 in the Wingate of Melrose Nursing Home, he was 84 years old. Walter was born in Everett on April 27, 1932. one of thirteen children of the late Eli & Miriam (Hudson) Cummings.

       Walter was educated in the Everett School system and was a graduate of Everett High School Class of 1950. In 1952 Walter joined the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and received the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. He served with the Hq. 6520th Air Base Group. He was later discharged in April of 1955.

        Walter worked alongside his father, a master finish carpenter. At one job his dad was contacted to build a church alter for a local church in Everett. Walter enjoyed working and leaning the trade with his dad.  He later took employment with the Boston Stock Exchange and worked his way up the ladder. He became a Executive Secretary of the Exchange and later became one of its Vice President’s. He worked for the Exchange for 43 years.  

        Walter was an avid Boston Sports fan he loved watching all teams and mostly the Boston Red Sox. He loved to bowl and belonged with leagues in Peabody and the Malden area. In his spare time, he cherished his time watching his children & grandchildren in their sports endeavors. He enjoyed working a good puzzle, loved fishing in the lakes in New Hampshire. Walter and Liz were married in the Immaculate Conception Church in Malden in 1956 and spent the next 48 years together raising their three children and seven grandchildren. Liz later passed on in 2004.

        Walter was the beloved husband of the late Elizabeth C. “Liz” (Williamson) Cummings.  He was the devoted father of Mary J. Cohen of Holliston, David J. Cummings of Beverly & Scott W. Cummings of Malden. Loving brother of Marjorie De Cicco of NH and predeceased by eleven brother & sisters. Walter was the cherished grandfather of Jason C. & Adam Z. Cummings, Brendan I. & Douglas J. Cohen, Briana M. Naoum, Samantha N. & Zachary A. Cummings.

        His funeral will be held from the Weir-Mac Cuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St., Malden, on Wednesday, August 10, 2016  at 9 AM,  followed by a prayer service at 10AM,  interment to follow in Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden. Visiting hours in the funeral home on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 from 4-8 PM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Walter’s memory may be made to a charity of ones choice.
