Stephen C. Chuha

1934 - 2018

Stephen C. Chuha, Sr. of Stoneham, formerly of Malden succumbed to pneumonia, related to the Alzheimer Disease he battled for many years, on September 20th at the age of 84. Steve was born on June 16, 1934, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Chuha and younger brother of Louise. Raised in Braddock, PA he enlisted in the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict. Near the end of his enlistment, while stationed at Ft. Devens, he met his future wife, Joan Rivers. The two were married at St. Joseph's Church, Malden, in 1956, and settled in Malden to raise their seven children and his beloved dog, Onie.

To support his growing family, he worked many jobs, as a machinist for Lawson Tool and Die, Pullman Vacuum and Malden Casket Company.

Steve was most proud however, as a fire fighter for the Malden Fire Department. He was a fixture at the Maplewood Station where he developed a close camaraderie with the men with whom he worked. Often he would give up holidays and vacations to assist his brothers on the force. Two historic events he would recall were The Chelsea Fire of 1973 and The Blizzard of 1978. A grand retirement party was held in 1988 when over 100 guests celebrated his many years of devoted service. After retiring he kept busy by working for his son's construction company and happily doing everything and anything for his family.
Steve had a green thumb and loved flowers, gardening, nature and the outdoors. He enjoyed collecting stamps, baseball cards, coins and antiques. He was an avid sports fan with hockey capturing his devotion. Music, dancing, traveling and taking long walks around the city were some of his favorite activities.

He is survived by his wife, Joan (Rivers), his children; Elizabeth J. Knight, her husband Owen, their children Christopher and the late Rebecca; Valerie J. Rossi, her husband James, III, their children Lilah, Stephanie and James, IV; Stephen C. Chuha, Jr., his wife Teri, their daughters Ashley, Lauren and Abbilyn; Lori A. Notarangeli, her husband Michael, their children Victoria and Cole; David M. Chuha, his wife Kris, their sons David and Kyle; Diane M. Chuha; Kristy C. Long, her husband Tommy, their sons Jared, Ryan and Ethan. Great grandfather of Nora. Cherished brother of Louise Metro. Steve is also survived by his much loved brothers and sisters in-law and many nieces and nephews.
