George Chopelas



     George Chopelas, long-time resident of Malden, passed away at Wingate of Melrose Nursing Home on October 19, 2016. He was a Valentine’s Day baby, and age 85 at the time of his passing.

      He was the loving father of the late Christina Nigro and the loving grandfather of the Leah Burns, as well as two grandsons, Jay and James. He was the brother of Christine Cugini, Christopher Chopelas, Virginia Beninati, Thomas Chopelas, Timothy Chopelas, Vivian Chopelas, Maryellen Garland, Melanie Strickland, Gregory Chopelas, Diane Dillon, as well as brother of the late Lester Burnell, Stephen Chopelas, Cynthia Chopelas, Stephanie Dillon, Rena Dillon, and Arthur Chopelas.

      George served in the US Navy for four years, and was a talented singer who appeared at clubs in Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada and at other venues in California and across the country under the stage name of George Curtis. Later in his life he worked as a cook at the family business, Schopell’s Cafeteria in Malden Square. He was a member of Club 24 and was a sponsor and mentor to many in the AA Program in this area, as well as working for a time as a Counselor in the program at Somerville Hospital.

      A gathering of family and friends will be held in memory of George at Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden on Thursday, October 27, 2016 from 6-9pm.
