Richard A. Breen

1938 - 2018

 


Richard A. Breen, a longtime resident of Malden, passed away on Sunday, Aug 12th, in Boston. Richard was born in Medford in 1938, the son of Joseph and Catherine Breen. He spent most of his childhood in Charlestown, and graduated from Charlestown High School. Richard had a career with the Department of Defense, first as a machinist in the Charlestown Navy Yard through his retirement as a Defense Contracts Administrator.

In 1964, Richard married his sweetheart, Barbara Crowley, and the two immediately settled down in Malden to raise their family. They were active members of Sacred Hearts Church, and together served as Eucharistic Ministers for the Church. They shared almost 54 years of Marriage together.

Richard served for several years in the Army Reserve. He was also active in the community, as a member of the Malden Democratic Committee, his Ward Committee, and he served on the Malden Board of Registrar of Voters, and recently became involved in the Malden Community Garden program. He was also very involved with Community Boat Building in Boston, where he mentored children from the Boston Public Schools on math, teamwork, and woodworking as they learned to build wooden boats.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara C. (Crowley) Breen, his daughter Carolyn Heald and her husband Kent, his sister Catherine Rais and her husband Frank, and his grandchildren, Hannah, William, and Bridget, his son-in-law, Michael Beecy of Beverly, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his daughter, Maureen Beecy, and his brother, William Breen.

Funeral from the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home on Monday, August 20th, at 9 AM followed by a Memorial Mass in Sacred Hearts Church, Malden, at 10 AM. Committal to follow in Holy Cross Mausoleum. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, August 19th, from 4 – 8 PM.
