Donald W. Boyce

    Donald W. Boyce, Retired Chief  Fire Inspector, City of Malden and  a  lifelong resident of Malden passed away at his daughter’s home, in Malden after a lengthy illness, with  his family at his bedside. He was 84. Don was born in Stoneham, on January 3, 1932 the son of the late  Rendall & Sarah Louise (Carter) Boyce.  

    He was educated in the Malden school system, and left high school early to help fight with the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He enlisted in January of 1949 and served his country with the Army for the next three years. He was discharged January 11, 1952 as a Private First Class and received the Army Occupation Medal and the Korean Service Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star.

    On March 15, 1952 he married his sweetheart, Joan A.  MacCuish. The couple settled in Malden and started a family. They added four loving children to their family:  Joan, Donald, Donna, and Thomas.  The couple spent the next 64 years together.

    On February 14, 1960  Donald was appointed to the Malden Fire Department, as a permanent man and was assigned to District 3. He also served   with Districts 1 and 2 and in 1972 was assigned as aid to the Deputy Chief.

    On December 7, 1981, Firefighter Boyce was assigned to the Fire Prevention Division as Inspector. On July 1, 1988, Inspector Boyce was designated  as Chief Inspector.  

    He was officially commended for his rescue of a person from a fire at 83 Pleasant St., Malden on December 2, 1979. He also received several commendations from the Middlesex County District Attorney’s office in connection with the fire and arson investigations.

    Malden Fire Chief Frank Fitzgerald, Assistant Chief for Personnel Paul R. Hirtle and Malden Fire Commissioner, Edward J. Casey commended Boyce for his thirty three years, two months and seventeen days of service to the Malden Fire Department and the City of Malden.

    He enjoyed his vacations and later in his retirement days spent winters  in Orlando & Punta Gorda, FL with his loving wife Joan and other family and friends. He had a love for golf and would play often. He enjoyed following Boston sports teams and spending time with his grandchildren & great-grandchildren.  He worked as a bartender at the Moose for many years.

    Donald  was the beloved husband of Joan A. (MacCuish) Boyce. Loving father of Joan Allder and husband Larry of Punta Gorda, FL,  Donald  Boyce  and wife Linda of Peabody, Donna Freni and husband Robert of Malden and Thomas Boyce and wife Maureen of Peabody.

    Loving brother of Carolyn Snow and husband George of Reading, Myrtle Bellemore and husband Al of Salem, NH. Cherished grandfather of nine grandchildren, including his late granddaughter Khristina Boyce and six great-grandchildren. Donald was also survived by many loving nieces & nephews.

    Funeral services will be held in the Weir –MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 114 Salem St., Malden, on Tues., Sept. 13, 2016  at 10AM, followed by interment in Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden.  Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Monday, September 12, 2016  from 4-8 PM.

    In lieu of flowers contributions in Donald’s memory may be made to the  Malden Fire Department Relief Association, C/O Malden Fire Dept. 1 Sprague St., Malden, MA 02148 or a charity of one’s choice.
